78 determined poker players arrived on Thursday February 2nd for Myisrael’s fifth poker event – with a top cash prize of £2,000 to be won, the guests were keen to crack on to see who would be the lucky winner.
After a “posh picnic buffet” and some mingling, the guests moved through to the makeshift casino. Committee member Jason Shelley welcomed everyone and gave an emotive talk about Myisrael. Moments later, tournament director J.D took over and the game kicked off.
When the rebuy period started, helpers were rushing from one corner of the room to the next to deliver chips as the game went up a notch. As the blinds continued, so did the rebuys. Players made the most of their last chance to buy chips right up until the break.
Laura was on hand to provide massages for those who couldn’t handle the stress!
The break was upon us before we knew it, and after a cup of tea and a Danish, there was much excitement as the auction began. Thanks to Jonny Groman who was at the helm and helped raise over £2,400 from the amazing items that were sold – a diamond ring kindly donated by 77 Diamonds, a 4 ball at the Grove, a night at Sopwell House and some fabulous framed items of sports memorabilia including a signed Pele shirt and two photographs of Muhammed Ali, signed by the renowned photographer Thomas Hoepker.
Poker resumed, and players returned to the game to compete for their place on the final table. Prizes, including bottles of Scotch, restaurant vouchers and retro LPs (among others) were won by players who knocked out those with Bounties on their heads.
Eventually we had our final table. Lee Conway ultimately left victorious, with Richard Berman as runner-up but congratulations to all the finalists and a huge thank you to all the guests, committee, volunteers, J.D and the generous sponsors and donors who together helped us to raise an amazing £13,500 for Myisrael projects.
See you next year!
